Who are some of the great heroes of the past 10 years in America?

We come across heroes in our everyday lives but often fail to recognize them. Let us take a look at some of the top unlikely heroes of the decade gone by.

James Shaw Jr.

A gunman came to the Waffle House which is near Nashville. This happened on the morning of April 22nd, 2018. Shaw had no desire to be a hero at that point of time. All he wanted to do was survive.

He moved towards the bathroom after first few bullets were fired. He saw no escape in sight. The shooter momentarily pointed his AR-15 towards the ground. Shaw rushed to the shooter and grabbed his rifle. He saved many lives in the process, but suffered from bullet graze wound and burns.

Brad Brown

Brad Brown came across as an unlikely hero in 2018 Californian wild forest fires. This was the most destructive Californian wild forest fire in past 168 years. While firefighters were the heroes, so were the untrained citizens who risked their own lives to save others’.

Brad Brown is a hospital chaplain in Paradise, Calif. There was an evacuation in progress when Brown arrived at work, and he helped with the same. When ambulances were full, he loaded 3 patients from ICU into his own vehicle, maneuvering the vehicle for hours to safety, through fire ridden paths.

The patients required care and Brown decided to drive his vehicle through a wall of fire to safety at one point of time. He saw no point in turning back.

Tammie Jo Shults

On April 17th, 2018, an engine of the Soutwest Airlines exploded. Lives of all those present on flight 1380 were in the hands of Tammie Jo Shultz.

Before Shults became a commercial pilot, she used to be one of the first female fighter pilots in the US Navy.

Even through the drastic circumstances, Shults kept her cool and returned 143 passengers aboard on Boeing 737 to earth.

The aircraft was merely 20 minutes into the flight when engine failure occurred. Fragments of the engine flew past the plane, and broke a passenger window. The passenger next to the window, Jennifer Riordan succumbed to injuries. Since 2009, this was the only casualty involving a commercial U.S.-registered passenger air carrier.
